Sample Question:

My husband and I live in an established religious community on the West Coast and have a great marriage. However, we have differing parenting approaches. He is affectionate, smart, and can be very funny. The children adore him. But, when our four children, ages 3 to 10, are noisy, slow or when they make mistakes, he can be impatient and demanding. He says that since he works extremely hard to support us, he expects obedience without further discussion. When the kids have not met his expectations, he punishes them by taking away privileges. He believes his way of parenting will “shape the kids up fast”. For my part, I tend to be a bit more laid back and believe that children need time to explore and grow. I like to read about child development and want to learn some less confrontational methods for gaining kids’ cooperation. Which approach is right?
